Adult Volunteers

Adults can also make a difference, one girl at a time! Your volunteer efforts will help girls build courage, confidence, and character! Plus, you’ll have the unique opportunity to gain professional skills in organization, education, and community building.

There are more than 8,000 girls in Utah whose lives are changed as a direct result of the efforts of Girl Scout volunteers like you! Without adults playing many pivotal roles, Girl Scouting could not happen. Awaken in girls their promise to develop their full potential to make the world a better place.

Adults can volunteer in a variety of roles that fit their interests, schedule, and abilities. Volunteer in any of the pathways/programs listed below.

Girl Scout Juliettes

Girls do not have to belong to a traditional Girl Scout troop to enjoy the benefits of Girl Scouting. Individually-registered girls who are not a part of a troop may become Girl Scout Juliettes.
Working individually with the support of family and friends, Juliettes participate in a variety of activities. Activities may include going to camp, participating in events, selling cookies, or joining leadership programs. Juliettes may also earn badges and recognitions.

Troops

In a Girl Scout troop, the same group of girls meets to participate in a variety of activities, usually over a span of nine to 12 months. Troops provide an opportunity to discover, connect, and take action with girls of the same age and grade level. Note: A troop that also goes camping or participates in events as a group is still operating in the troop pathway (not the camp or events pathways).

A troop:

  • Consists of multiple volunteer-led programs with the same group of girls.
  • Is made up of girls who typically meet at least once per month on an on-going basis.
  • Is flexible. Meeting times, duration, and dates vary by troop.
  • Enjoys a variety of activities, including events, cookies, science, badge work, etc.

Events

By signing up for a local or regional Girl Scout event, you become a Girl Scout! Check out Girl Scouts of Utah’s Fun Stuff program catalog and sign up for activities that interest you. Girls can participate in events and/or minicamps by themselves, with friends, or with a parent/guardian. Different girls participate at each event. Some events require adult attendance.

Events are stand-alone but girls can participate in multiple activities each year. Examples:

  • Attend a science or technology event at a local university and meet real scientists while conducting experiments.
  • Go on an exciting Girl Scout Journey where you will make friends, go on outdoor adventures, and earn awards.
  • Participate or assist at a carnival or dance event organized by local Girl Scout volunteers.

Other events may include high/low ropes courses, babysitting workshops, snowshoeing, pottery, photography, art experiences, or overnighters. Click here to view Fun Stuff events offered.

Series

Participate in a series of activities for a few weeks or months. Girls often participate in series pathways that relate to a specific theme or purpose (science, outdoors, health, leadership, etc.). Series pathways engage the same group of girls throughout the entire series.

Girl Scouts Forever Green (an environmental education and advocacy program)  is an example of a series pathway. To find out more about Girl Scouts Forever Green contact programs@gsutah.org.

Adult volunteers with a specific skill set or background may lead a series pathway troop for several months. Click here to submit an inquiry about volunteering in a series pathway.

Camp

Girls who want to experience the great outdoors can participate in day, weekend, and resident camp experiences. A defining characteristic of this program pathway is that it is an outdoor, condensed experience.

  • Girls ages 5 to 17 can enjoy Girl Scouting through camp.
  • Camp programs are offered for girls to attend by individually, with a buddy, with a Girl Scout troop (if she belongs to one), or with a parent or guardian.
  • Day events, overnights, half week camps, and weeklong camps are offered.
  • Camp programs focus on outdoor experiences and adventures, like nature hikes, snowshoeing, bike riding, horses, and canoeing.

Day Camp
Day camp is a volunteer-run introductory outdoor experience, typically three days in duration. Day camps run during the summer in established geographic areas. Girls who are not current Girl Scout members can join to participate in their local day camp. Day camp activities may include nature studies, outdoor skills, arts and crafts, and badge work. Contact Becky List at blist@gsutah.org for more information.

Resident Camp
Resident camp is an outdoor camping experience in which campers live at an established site. Short-term resident camp experiences last no more than three nights. Long-term experiences typically last four or more nights

  • Half-week programs are available for girls who have finished grades 1–3.
  • Girls who have finished grades 1–12 can attend resident camp for weeklong sessions (Monday–Saturday) June through August of each year.
  • Camp activities at Trefoil Ranch (Provo) include horseback riding, high and low ropes courses, biking, archery, and arts and crafts.
  • Camp activities at Camp Cloud Rim (Park City) include canoeing, backpacking, pottery, photography, cooking, and leadership.

Leadership Programs

Experience Girl Scouts with a variety of amazing leadership positions! Participation in leadership programs gives girls opportunities to share their expertise and knowledge with others. Girls have a great time being leaders!

  • Program Aides (PAs) are trained Girl Scouts that are essential to Girl Scout programming. PAs work with younger girls in troop, group, day camp, community, or council-sponsored event settings under the supervision of adult volunteers or council staff.
  • Girls ages 14–17 may participate in the LEAP or Counselor-in-Training programs offered at Camp Cloud Rim during the summer. Programs last two to three weeks, and girls must complete an application and interview process. Register using the resident camp registration form. For more information click here.
