Camp Health Services

First Aid

The camp health center is supervised by a level 2 first-aider per Safety-Wise guidelines. A doctor is on-call and medical facilities are readily available. The camp is able to administer basic first aid.

Girls need to be able to understand and manage their own health care. For example, a child with asthma needs to be responsible enough to carry her inhaler, take her medication when necessary, and report to camp staff if she needs additional medication. A child with diabetes needs to be able to test her own blood, communicate when she needs a snack or rest, and manage her own medicine. The camp cannot administer shots.

Campers will be sent home if the Camp Director deems that the camper:

  • Requires care beyond basic first aid.
  • Needs to be treated by a doctor or clinic.
  • Is contagious (pinkeye, lice, strep throat, rash, etc.).
  • Spends more than one night in the health center or is too sick to participate for more than 12 hours.
  • Has a fever over 102 degrees.

If a girl has been sent home for health reasons, she may return to camp with a written release from a physician.

In the event of an emergency, the camp will transport campers to emergency services. Parents/guardians will be notified of serious illnesses or injuries.

Medication

Medications need to be in original containers and prescribed specifically for the camper. The camp can assist campers who need regular medication on a set schedule. Campers that occasionally need treatment such as medication for a headache, allergies, or lactose intolerance will need to be able to communicate to staff that they need this medication or it will not be given to them.

The camp carries over-the-counter medication such as Tylenol, ibuprofen, Tums, Benedryl, and cough drops that parents can authorize the camp to administer on the release form.

Health Insurance

Campers are covered by health and accident insurance while they are at camp.  Pre-existing illnesses or conditions are not covered.

Health Screen (for events three nights or longer)

All girls and adults will go through a brief health screening upon arrival at camp. Girls and adults found to have a high temperature or contagious disease will be sent home. All participants are checked for head lice; if lice are found, the camper will be sent home for treatment before being allowed back at camp.

Physical Examinations (for events three nights or longer)

In accordance with the American Camp Association and GSUSA, Girl Scouts of Utah requires all girls and adults have a physical examination by a licensed health care professional within 24 months of camp attendance.

The "Physical Exam" form and "Health History" form will be sent to you with your confirmation materials. Make a copy of these forms for your records. We do not return physical forms. The "Physical Exam" form, "Health History" form, "Outdoor Program Girl Release" form, and "All About You" form must be completed and mailed to the council.

West Nile Virus

Experts advise those spending time outdoors after dusk to take precautions against mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves, long pants, and mosquito repellent.

Refunds Due to Illness

Partial refunds are made only if a girl becomes ill and cannot attend her camp session as scheduled. A physician's note is required and a request for the refund must be submitted in writing to GSU within one week after the camp session. No refunds are given if a girl returns home during camp because of illness, injury, homesickness, and/or any other circumstance.
The Camp Director has the right to refuse admittance to any girl/adult who does not meet acceptable health conditions.
