Camp Staff FAQ

What do I learn at training?
Pre-camp training covers everything you need to know about working at camp:

  • Policies and procedures
  • Safety protocol
  • Behavior management
  • Conflict resolution
  • Age-level characteristics
  • Camp songs and games
  • Camp activities
  • Girl Scout badges
  • Outdoor skills
  • Team building

How long do the campers stay?
Our campers come for three days to three weeks, depending on age and program. Most campers stay for five nights, arriving Monday morning and departing Saturday morning.

Do I get time off?
Yes. All staff receive two hours off each day and at least 24 hours off per week. Most of the time you will be off Saturday afternoon through Monday morning; some weeks, you will get your “weekend” at a different time.

Can I take days off during the summer for family events or a vacation?
It is up to the Camp Director's discretion to grant unpaid leave for vacation or other events. We prefer to hire staff members who can stay for the entire contract season and will not grant excessive unpaid leave requests

Am I covered by insurance?
Yes. You are covered by basic health and accident insurance during your time of work. This does not apply to preexisting conditions.

Is room and board provided?
Yes, they're free! Three well-balanced meals are provided each day. There is also a kitchen in the staff lounge where you are welcome to store your own food.

Where will I live?
Camp staff stay in platform tents (a large canvas tent on a wooden platform). Each tent sleeps about four people on cots and mattresses. Staff tents are near girls' tents. Girls and staff do not stay in tents together.

How do I do my laundry?

Free washers and dryers and laundry soap are provided.

Where can I stay on the weekends?
You are welcome to stay or leave camp on the weekends.

What can I do during my time off?
During your two hour break you need to stay at camp. For your night off or the weekend you can leave camp. During time off, staff members like to go for hikes, check the Internet, use cell phones, take a nap, or hang out in the staff lounge that includes a TV, video/DVD player, couches, showers, kitchen facilities, computers, and Internet.

Do I need to have been a Girl Scout in the past to work at camp?
No. Most of our staff have never been a Girl Scout or have never been to camp. We offer a pre-camp training that covers everything you need to know about working at camp: policies and procedures, safety protocols, behavior management, conflict resolution, age-level characteristics, songs and games, activities, badges, outdoor skills, and team building.

Do I have to wear a uniform?
A camp shirt will be provided to you that you will need to wear during camper check-in and check out (Monday and Saturday mornings). During the rest of the week, you are welcome to wear your own clothes, as long as you adhere to the camp’s dress code.

Why should I work at your camps?
Our camps are ACA accredited. We meet over safety 200 standards and have a high rate of returning staff and campers. Our camps have multi-million dollar, beautiful facilities. As Camp Directors, we care about our camp staff's well-being and professional development. We are committed to providing the highest quality, outcome-based program in a safe environment supported by caring, qualified, team-oriented camp staff professionals.

Can my friends work with me at camp?
Yes! We encourage you to bring qualified friends. In fact, we have a Bring a Friend campaign. For every friend you recruit to work at camp who stays the entire summer, you will receive a $50 bonus (up to three friends). Your friend needs to list you on her/his application.

What is the hiring process?
1. Complete an application. Applications are available here or by contacting Becky List, Outdoor Program Specialist, at blist@gsutah.org or (801) 716-5127.
2. Once we receive your application, we’ll contact you to schedule an interview. Interviews will begin in mid-February and continue until all positions are filled.
