Adult Education and Training

Leadership and General Volunteer Training

Volunteer training is essential. The top reason we focus on safety is because we want to make sure girls are safe from physical harm. We also want to make sure volunteers understand what it means to provide a safe learning environment where girls can take personal risks and grow.

There are multiple benefits of training for adults: it is personally rewarding; there are opportunities to develop leadership, organizational skills, and talents; and volunteers can share new program activities and best practices. Because of training you can form supportive relationships with other adults and may also enjoy more enriched interactions with girls. Many adults include Girl Scout training on their resumes.

Accessibility, Versatility, and Adaptability

Since 90% of our volunteers work with girls, it is important for Girl Scouts of Utah to create a comprehensive learning program using traditional classroom workshops, webinar sessions, self-study guides, and online trainings.

Classroom Workshops
Classroom workshops are facilitated by experienced volunteer trainers on a wide range of topics. Courses and workshops are scheduled throughout the year and are held in areas throughout our council jurisdiction.

Webinar Sessions
Webinar trainings and meetings are offered through a phone and web-based format. This provides the opportunity for volunteers to join together without having to leave home. Details regarding the phone conference number and web site links options will be emailed to participants who register by the deadline. To learn more about upcoming webinar sessions, including dates and times, click here.

Self-Study Printed Manuals
Self-study printed manual contain instructional text. To obtain a self-study printed manual, please contact your local GSU service center.

Workshop Specifics

Any adult 18 years of age or older may register for an adult education course. Some courses are designed specifically to train troop facilitators and co-facilitators, while others are open to any interested adult who wants to enhance her or his Girl Scout experience.

Troop Facilitator/Co-Facilitator Guidelines

New Troop Facilitators and Co-Facilitators
New facilitators need to complete the following courses:

  • Girl Scouts of the United States of American (GSUSA) Orientation
  • Volunteer Essentials

It is not required to repeat these two courses when changing grade levels. However, the Girl Scout Orientation needs to be completed prior to taking Volunteer Essentials and Troop Module. All three training courses must be taken prior to volunteering in a troop leadership position.

Troop Facilitators and Co-Facilitators Bridging to the Next Grade Level
When a troop or group is bridging to the next grade level, the troop facilitator is only required to take the appropriate Troop Module, which includes a grade level information manual.
