Neighborhood Support for Volunteers

Girl Scouts of Utah supports adult volunteers through Service Units that are run by a volunteer team. A Service Unit is comprised of Girl Scout troops, groups, and Juliettes in a specific geographic location. There are 40 active Service Units throughout our council jurisdiction. Click here for a list of specific Service Unit boundaries and support staff.

Girl Scouts of Utah encourages each Service Unit to select volunteers to be part of the unit's administrative leadership team. The Service Unit team is vital to the foundation of Girl Scouting. Service Units usually meet once a month to exchange ideas, present program resources and training, and network.

Service Unit Volunteers

The Service Unit Director is the key administrative volunteer in a geographic area for Girl Scouts of Utah. The Service Unit Director's main responsibilities are:

  • Recruiting and managing the volunteer Service Unit team
  • Interpreting and supporting GSU and GSUSA policies and procedures
  • Developing communications methods to educate, mentor, and welcome new leaders, and offering direct support to adult volunteers in the Service Unit
  • Offering introduction to the registration process and Service Unit details to adults interested in Girl Scouts in their area. The Service Unit Director may do this or she/he may select someone in the Service Unit who will be trained and conduct these in-person welcome sessions.

Service Unit SUD-Bud

The SUD-Bud position has been designed to support the Service Unit with two major accountabilities. It is suggested that this person commit to this role for at least two years. The SUD-Bud should be prepared to assume the duties of the Service Unit Director, if necessary. The SUD-Bud's two accountabilities are:

  • Overseeing recognitions for girls, adults, and community sponsors
  • Managing policy-influencing volunteers and ensuring the Service Unit has appropriate delegate representation at Town Meetings, Service Unit meetings, and the Annual Meeting.

Service Unit Registrar

Girl Scouts of Utah welcomes every girl in Girl Scouts. Our goal is to provide the Girl Scout experience to every girl who wishes to be a member. The Service Unit Registrar is vital to the growth and retention of members in the organization. The Registrar's primary duties are:

  • Reporting the status of troop membership to GSU staff and Service Unit on a monthly basis.
  • Understanding and communicating the council's early re-registration campaign to troop facilitators in the spring.

Service Unit Finance Director

It's important for our organization to be financially transparent. Staff and volunteers alike are responsible for safeguarding the reputation of Girl Scouts for years to come. The Finance Director in each Service Unit trains adult volunteers and supports individual accountability for Girl Scout funds. The Service Unit Finance Director's main responsibilities are:

  • Overseeing the bank accounts and reports for the Service Unit.
  • Understanding and communicating financial policies and procedures to the Service Unit.
  • Communicating and overseeing Girl Scouts of Utah Family Campaign information to the Service Unit and working closely with the Development and Alumni Relations department.

They also enjoy the splendor of Service Unit events and council-sponsored opportunities. Our goal is to provide experiences girls can enjoy in their geographic area in a safe Girl Scout environment. The Event Director helps coordinate events in the Service Unit and receives staff support. The Event Director is responsible for:
