Award FAQ

Who are the members of the Girl Scouts of Utah Awards and Recognitions Task Group?

The Task Group consist of GSU volunteers and one staff member.

Why are adult awards and recognitions important?

Recognition is an important element in the retention of volunteers. We should recognize Girl Scout volunteers for a job well done!

Who is allowed to nominate an individual for an award?

Anyone! Adults and girls may nominate anyone who they feel is an outstanding volunteer.

Who can be given an award?

Any adult that meets the award criteria.

Can I nominate my best friend, my mother, or myself?

Yes. Proper documentation and award requirements need to be met.

Why do I need so much documentation?

Awards should reflect remarkable service. Proper documentation ensures that the criteria have been met and the volunteer is eligible for the award.

Where can I find all the details about the volunteer career of the person that I want to nominate?

Ask them! Ask family members, friends, and other GSU volunteers. You can use the help of your Service Unit team members.

Where can I find position descriptions, so I know if the person that I want to nominate has gone "above and beyond" the expectations of the job?

Contact your Service Unit Director or your Girl Services Director.

I don't think the Task Group understands how incredible this volunteer is. How can I convince them that she/he really deserves the award?

Make sure to provide detailed information and documentation about what the individual has done so there are no questions about how incredible the volunteer is. State what was done, when it was done, who it served, and what the results were.

The Task Group must already know this person since she's been a volunteer for so long. Why do they still need all of this information?

Girl Scouts of Utah has more than 3,000 adult volunteers. Members of the Task Group may not know them, so please share their awesome volunteer story with us!

How can someone be a volunteer for 10 to 15 years and not have any or all of the awards?

They may not have been nominated for an award. If they are an exceptional volunteer, nominate them!

Which award is the first award most people receive?

Certificate of Appreciation and the Noteworthy New Leader Award are good choices.

I already have the Green Angel Award, but I'd like the Emerald Award, as well. Can I receive both?

No. The Emerald Award is a replacement award for the Green Angel, and the requirements are identical.

Are there awards for people who serve the entire GSUSA organization?

Yes, contact GSUSA for more information at www.girlscouts.org.

Why is the award deadline in February?

The Task Group members must meet, read all nominations, evaluate, and have awards ready in time for the council's Recognition of Excellence Event.

Why didn't the Task Group approve the award that I made the nomination for?

Often this is due to a nomination that is lacking the necessary documentation. Occasionally it is also due to a nomination for an award that does not fit the level of service given.

Sometimes the award a person receives is not the one they were nominated for. Why does this happen?

The documentation may not fit the criteria of the award; however, another award was appropriate for the volunteer that the Task Group wished to give.

If I turn a nomination in after the deadline, what happens to it?

It will be returned to the nominator for submission next year.

How consistent are these awards from year to year and area to area?

The Task Group wants to recognize volunteers throughout Utah! The Task Group reviews and approves awards, taking into consideration our entire volunteer base throughout the state. All volunteers from every Service Unit are encouraged to submit award nominations.

Why are staff awards less common than volunteer awards?

Girl Scouting is a volunteer based organization and these awards are designed to be given to volunteers.

What is the correct placement for award pins on the adult uniform?

Please refer to the current GSUSA catalog or website for appropriate placement.

Why can't I fax nomination materials?

Faxed copies are sometimes unreadable. Please use one of the three methods provided in this packet.
