SALT LAKE CITY – Girl Scouts of Utah is pleased to announce that two Utah Girl Scouts were among 90 national GSUSA essay contest winners who have earned a Space Science badge that has literally been to the moon and back.
In early 2022, Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) sponsored the “Girl Scouts to the Moon and Back” essay contest. This week, GSUSA announced that Junior Girl Scout, Victoria Moore, from Utah Troop 194 and Junior Girl Scout Karissa Amante, of Utah Troop 498 were among the winners who will receive a badge that is being sent aboard NASA’s Artemis I, which is set for launch from Kennedy Space Center on Monday, Nov. 14. (Launch window is between Nov. 14, 2022, and Dec. 9, 2022, and mission is dependent on weather.)
The launch is particularly notable to Girl Scouts because Artemis I is NASA’s first step toward the goal of sending the first woman and the first person of color to the moon. In addition, several Girl Scout alums have been involved in the Artemis I mission including NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy and Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, the mission’s first female launch director.
“NASA has been an incredibly dedicated and enthusiastic partner of Girl Scouts, inspiring girls to pursue careers in STEM and aiding us as we champion girls’ interest in space exploration,”
said Girl Scouts of Utah CEO Lisa Hardin-Reynolds. “It’s another reminder that not even the sky is the limit when you consider what Girl Scouts can achieve, and we are excited to follow the journey of the Artemis I in the days ahead.”
